How to Get PLA to Stick to the Bed
PLA on a clean textured PEI plate needs no glue, no hairspray, no tricks — it just sticks. So when PLA doesn't stick, resist the urge to add adhesives and find out what broke instead. It is a short list.
Work the list in order
1. Wash the plate with dish soap and warm water. The single most common cause. Every fingertip that touches the plate leaves oil; IPA wipes move it around, soap removes it. Dry with a clean towel and handle by the edges. If prints stuck when the plate was new, assume grease until proven otherwise.
2. Check the bed temperature. Bambu’s stock PLA values: 55 °C on textured PEI, 35 °C on the Cool Plate, 40 °C on SuperTack. Weak adhesion responds to +5 °C, but stop at 65: PLA softens around 45 °C, and past that the cure becomes elephant foot. Other vendors’ PLA baselines run 45–65 °C beds; the physics is the same everywhere.
Filament settings → Filament (bed temperature row for your plate)3. Slow the first layer to 20 mm/s. Fast first layers skate over the plate instead of pressing in. Most stock profiles lay the first layer at 50 mm/s, which assumes a perfect surface; halving it (or less) buys bite on an imperfect one.
4. Re-run bed leveling / full calibration after swapping plates, and make sure the plate sits flush — a blob of old filament under the back edge tilts everything. Wipe the nozzle tip too; a dangling blob ploughs through the fresh first layer.
Plate pairings worth knowing
- Textured PEI is PLA’s natural home: strong grip, parts self-release as the plate cools, texture hides first-layer flaws.
- Smooth PEI grips PLA well and gives a glossy bottom, but shows every leveling imperfection. Fine to use; expect to be pickier about calibration.
- Engineering-type plates hold PLA noticeably worse (55 °C in the stock profile). Workable with a glue film, but if PLA is your daily material, PEI is simply the right plate.
- Cool Plate / SuperTack are designed with PLA in mind — low bed temperatures, easy release. If PLA won’t stick to SuperTack, the surface is almost certainly contaminated: these coatings are the most grease-sensitive of all. Soap wash, never solvents.
If it still won’t stick
Three less-common culprits, in descending order: a worn plate — PEI does fade after hundreds of cycles, and a years-old sheet that fails the soap test twice deserves replacement; a drafty room — PLA tolerates a lot, but a cold stream of air across the plate edge cools the corners below bonding temperature; and old, damp filament — wet PLA bonds worse and prints dull; dry it 8 h at 55 °C. Whatever you do, keep it boring: PLA adhesion is a solved problem, and every additive workaround (glue, tape, hairspray) mostly hides one of the fixable causes above.
