How to Fix a Rough Print Surface on Bambu Lab Printers
A rough surface can mean grainy, dull walls, tiny bubbles and pits, ripples near corners, or texture that changes from one part of the print to another. The fix depends on which of three culprits you have: moisture, speed, or flow.
Read the texture: three patterns, three causes
Before changing anything, look closely at what kind of rough you have:
- Pits, micro-bubbles and a dull, fuzzy sheen everywhere — moisture. The texture follows the filament, not the geometry.
- Regular ripples that echo after corners and edges (ghosting/ringing) — speed and vibration. The pattern follows the geometry.
- Random fat and thin lines, texture that comes and goes — flow: wrong flow ratio, a worn nozzle, or a partial clog.
Check moisture first — it causes most rough surfaces
Filament that has absorbed water boils in the nozzle. The escaping steam leaves micro-bubbles and pits in every extrusion, which reads as a dull, grainy, sometimes fuzzy surface. If the surface got worse over weeks with the same spool, or you hear faint crackling at the nozzle, dry the spool before touching a single setting:
- PETG:

Quick fixes
Slow the outer wall. High outer-wall speed and acceleration cause ringing (ghost ripples after corners) and an uneven sheen. Drop the outer wall to 100–120 mm/s — the inner walls and infill can stay fast, so the print barely takes longer.
Re-run vibration calibration. If the printer has been moved, bumped or had its feet adjusted, the old resonance compensation no longer matches and walls get wavy. It takes a few minutes from the printer menu.
Calibrate flow for generic filament. With no-name spools, the generic profile’s flow ratio is a guess that can be off by several percent, which shows up as rough, inconsistent walls. Run the flow ratio and pressure advance calibrations in Bambu Studio’s Calibration tab — 15 minutes that remove most extrusion artifacts.

- Worn nozzle. Carbon-fibre and glow-in-the-dark filaments are abrasive; after many hours they erode the nozzle bore, and a worn nozzle extrudes unevenly forever after. If flow looks irregular and the nozzle has history with abrasive materials, replace it — and use hardened steel for CF filaments (standard on the X1 series and X2D, an accessory on P1 and A1 machines).
- Partial clog. A half-blocked nozzle causes intermittent thin extrusion that reads as rough texture. A cold pull usually clears it — see the clogging guide.
Material notes
- PETG is shiny by nature but turns rough and bubbly the moment it is damp; it is the most common “my surface got worse” material. Keep it in a dry box between prints.
- ABS/ASA print with a matte finish. Moisture shows up less as bubbles and more as a sandpapery texture plus weaker layers — dry at 80 °C if the spool has been sitting out for weeks.
- TPU under-extrudes easily if anything drags on the spool; feed it from a free-spinning external holder and keep flow modest — see the TPU guide.
- Carbon-fibre blends (PLA-CF, PETG-CF, PA-CF) have a naturally matte, slightly textured finish — that’s the fibres, not a defect. But if the texture is uneven or getting worse, suspect the nozzle: CF eats nozzle bores, and only hardened steel holds up.
Finally, remember the surface you can’t tune: the bottom. Its texture is a mirror of the plate — textured PEI stamps its pattern in, smooth PEI leaves gloss. If someone says your “surface is rough” and means the underside, that’s a plate choice, not a settings problem.
